TOPIC: THE REDEEMING FAITH: LESSON FROM THE BOOK OF RUTH Part 6 (Ruth 4:1-22)

In ancient Israel, God established a system of laws to protect families, especially widows, orphans, and the poor (Leviticus 25; Deuteronomy 25). One of these laws was the role of the kinsman-redeemer (Hebrew: go’el).

A kinsman-redeemer was a close male relative who had certain responsibilities:

    1. Redeem property – If a family member became poor and had to sell their land, the kinsman-redeemer could buy it back to keep it within the family line (Leviticus 25:25).
    2. Redeem family members – If a relative sold themselves into slavery because of debt, the redeemer could buy back their freedom (Leviticus 25:47–49).
    3. Levirate marriage (continuing the family line) – If a man died without children, his brother or nearest relative could marry the widow to produce offspring who would carry on the dead man’s name and inheritance (Deuteronomy 25:5–10).
