TOPIC: READING THE BIBLE FOR A CHANGE Part 3 (2 Peter 1:20-21)

Understanding context helps us avoid misinterpreting or misapplying Scripture. A verse taken out of context can be made to say something the original author never intended. But when we read Scripture in context, we are better able to grasp the true message the Holy Spirit inspired the writer to communicate.

Our interpretation must be guided by the context, not by personal opinions, emotions, or isolated verses. Without context, we risk twisting Scripture to fit our preferences. But when we honor the context, we allow Scripture to interpret Scripture, staying faithful to its original meaning and message.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
    — 2 Timothy 2:15
