THE REDEEMING FAITH: LESSON FROM THE BOOK OF RUTH Part 7 (Ruth 4:1-22)

For the concept of redemption to make sense, there must first be a loss, a departure from one’s original place of belonging or freedom. In the case of Ruth, she had lost her husband and her inheritance in Israel, and in many Old Testament instances, people lost their freedom due to poverty or debt (Leviticus 25:39–42). Redemption, therefore, was God’s means of restoring what was lost.

In the same way, humanity has lost its rightful place in God’s kingdom through sin. When Adam sinned, humanity forfeited its dominion and fellowship with God (Genesis 3:23–24; Romans 5:12). We became slaves to sin, subject to its power and to the penalty of death. Scripture declares, “Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34), and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).
