THE EKKLESIA PART 4 (EPHESIANS 4:11-16)

While evangelism brings people into the faith, discipleship is how they grow and mature in it. Jesus did not say, “Go and make converts,” but rather, “Make disciples.” One of the problems with the Church today is that we have abandonedthis crucial part of our duty—to disciple the flock of Christ. Many pastors are more concerned with the physical welfare of their congregations than with their spiritual maturity. This is evident when the emphasis is placed on prosperity and worldly success. While these things are not inherently wrong, they have no power to discipline or spiritually mature the Church.

Discipleship is the process of growing believers into the full likeness of Christ (Romans 8:29), transforming their character and grounding them in biblical truth. It is through mature disciples that God’s will is effectively carried out on earth. In the passage from Ephesians 4:11–16, we see that all the spiritual gifts and leadership offices within the body of Christ serve one unified purpose: to edify—to build up—the Church, meaning to grow believers into spiritual maturity in Christ.
