THE BAPTISM OF POWER Part 5 (1 Corinthians 12-14)

1 Corinthians 13 is often read as a general passage on love, but in context, Paul wrote it as a direct continuation of his teaching on spiritual gifts. He calls love “a more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31)—the only proper foundation and framework for using any gift. Paul’s message is simple yet profound: without love, even the most spectacular spiritual gifts lose their value and meaning.
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.”
    (1 Corinthians 13:1, ESV)

Love is the antidote to pride and competition in the use of spiritual gifts. It guards us from self-centeredness and redirects our motives toward service, compassion, and the building up of others. Every manifestation of the Spirit must flow from love and lead back to love.
