DID PAUL STUGGLED WITH SIN? UNDERSTANDING ROMANS 7

Many preachers have often used Romans 7 to justify the believer’s ongoing struggle with sin. They argue that if the great Apostle Paul himself wrestled with sin as he described in this chapter, then our own struggles are simply part of the Christian experience. By this reasoning, Paul’s words, “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing”, are taken as a reflection of his present condition as a believer.

But is that really what Paul was saying? Was Romans 7 a description of the normal Christian life, or was Paul illustrating something deeper? How does this chapter fit into the overall message of the book of Romans? And what does it truly teach about sin, the law, and grace?
